Interestingly enough, there is a school of thought that Grigory Rasputin was demonized unfairly because of his influence of the Romanov Dynasty and his ability to get people fired. Likewise, Rasputin's desire for an united Russia and Germany proved problematic. His popularity among commoners also caused fear among his enemies. Some believe that Felix Yuposov's accounts of Rasputin debauched promiscuity and upir-like powers were largely fabricated to discredit his influence. Much like what happened to the Tsar Rasputin himself, folks in power had a vested interest in discrediting the rogue religious leader.
Additionally, in a Russian version, Tsar's patronym (which typically is sort of like a middle name,) Smertovich, would translate as Son of Death. So he would mostly be known by that ironic name. I wanted to give a similar vibe in English and Rasputin seemed weirdly appropriate as well.
