Tsar becomes paranoid as the officer questions Geni.

COP
Hey buddy, did you see what happened to Marlen?

Marlen shooted himself because he wanted to grown-up kiss dad. But, we don't like bad people, so Dad told him to leave. Can I clean the yucky mess now?

Although I am not at all a fan of Putin, Russia's problem with system homophobia has a rather long and ugly history. This cop's reaction was actually not all that unusual at the time. Mentally ill and gay children in the Soviet foster care system didn't necessarily fare well. Not that the US had a much better track record.

Speaking of ugly, you may have noticed that Tsar mention mentioned that his relationship with Marlen was not just as a lover. In the next few pages you will learn how he went from just being the boy's prison mate, to something much darker.
